Unexpected (but joyous news!)

I am a member of See.Me, a site for creatives to showcase their work. The group includes photographers, fiber artists, painters, etc. Some of my work is here: https://artistmum1.see.me/

Last week, I received an unexpected e-mail from Emily, the community director of the site. She wrote that my work had been selected for a special exhibition "The Story of the Creative"! It will be in their digital exhibition space at their museum in New York City. (26-19 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City, NY, 11101) The exhibition will run from July 26-September 10, 2013.

I was surprised and thrilled by the offer. This isn't the first time I've displayed my work. Eight years ago, I submitted two paintings to an art gala sponsored by Charlotte's International House. The actual showing was in a rented space above some stores in the SouthPark area of town. (If you're local, it was off of Sharon Road. Pretty nice place.) I remember having to take my heels off and slip on some feet covers before I could wander the halls. There were some tasty hors d'oevres, and lots of wine. (Being pregnant with my older daughter at the time, I skipped the wine). It was a definite thrill to see my work hung on the wall with other artists, to see my name printed there.

The second time I displayed my work was at The Last Word Bookstore in the University Area of Charlotte. They buy and sell used books, videos, and DVDs. They also support local artists, including one that knits hats for display and one who makes natural soaps. Their art display area is relatively small, but I asked to display a few of my pieces for a couple of weeks. They were gracious and allowed me to do so. It's possible to hold actual art showings there, too. I haven't gotten the nerve to do that yet.

For a long time, I told myself that I was drawing and painting for myself. I still am, but it has taken me nearly 10 years to build up the confidence to show it to the world. I'm still terrified of what people will think/say/do when they see my work. I have had a grand total of one formal art lesson, and that doesn't count Art I in the eighth grade.

I hope this exhibition will be awesome. Stay tuned for more news about it.

Intro: A New Hub of Blogs or AKA "Another One?!"

This actually isn't a new blog. This was the address for my art gallery 'An Eighth Shot of Espresso." That one is now here: http://8thespressoart.blogspot.com/ I'll still post my art there, but this blog will consist of mostly creative posts and other projects during my 'third shift' of being a creative mum.

My kids are now home for summer vacation, so it's even more of a challenge to squeeze in time for painting or drawing. Lately, I've employed the 'if you can't do it, let 'em join you' idea. My two girls are thrilled to have their own watercolor paints from the dollar store. Christina, who is autistic, goes crazy over her finger paints. She has sensory issues and often ends up playing with water in the sink (or places where it really isn't a good idea, like the bathroom). With the finger paints, she can enjoy the feel of it on her hands and fingers and IT'S OKAY. :-D

I'll post the occasional masterpiece from the girls on this blog, and any creative sparks, ideas and excerpts here.

Looking forward to chatting with everyone.
